![]() Creigh Deeds Candidate for: Attorney General of The Commonwealth of Virginia Election Date: November 8, 2005 FINAL RESULTS Deeds: 49.95% McDonnell: 49.96% The Candidate Creigh Deeds is running for Attorney General (AG) of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The election is November 8th. Growing up lower-middle class in the western part of the state, Deeds has lived in and served Virginia all his life. He believes that all Virginians deserve to be represented on the state level. He writes: "I'm proud of the way I was raised, and I think it's important that those values that I grew up being taught, the good old-fashioned rural values, are not left behind." Deeds has served in the Virginia State Senate since 2001. Prior to joining the Senate, he served for 9 years in the Virginia House of Delegates (1992-2001) and got his start in public life as the Bath County Commonwealth Attorney (1989-1992). Creigh Deeds is moderate, knowledgeable and able to connect to voters from all over the state. CNM believes he is ready to make the jump to statewide office, but he needs our backing. Personally, Deeds is an interesting and colorful character. His style and background make him attractive in parts of Virginia where Democrats have been losing ground in recent years. Deeds enjoys a reputation for speaking straight, and for taking positions that may not always be optimally popular among his constituents. The Issues Creigh Deeds is committed to making Virginia safe and secure as Attorney General. He has been able to convince voters he is tough enough to handle homeland security crises. Talk on the campaign trail has centered on how to make Virginia's ports secure against terrorist and other attacks. This issue has gained greater exposure in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Creigh promises to lead the charge in securing more federal dollars to prepare the State of Virginia for such events. If elected, Creigh will also focus on cracking down on sexual predators and domestic violence, and addressing Virginia's emerging homegrown methamphetamine problem. In recent years, Deeds has been one of the few politicians in the country to routinely receive a 100% rating from NARAL and Planned Parenthood. He takes some moderate positions on some other high-profile issues. He is pro-gun rights. He also supports the death penalty, though he supports a moratorium to avoid killing innocents. He also supports a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as "between one man and one woman," but he supports amendments that would limit the clause's impact on non-marriage legal contracts. The Race Virginia is one of two states with a gubernatorial race this fall (the other is New Jersey). The race, which pits Tim Kaine (D) against Tom Kilgore (R), will draw attention to other statewide races and lead a strong turnout on Election Day. Mark Warner (D), the sitting governor who will be term-limited out at the end of the year, is supporting Kaine. The race for Virginia Attorney-General is wide-open; the last elected Attorney General, Jerry Kilgore, stepped down to run for governor. The last three AGs in Virginia have been Republicans. Why CNM Supports Creigh Deeds Deeds has the character and background to appeal to voters on both sides of the aisle in what could be a southern swing state. Winning the AG post in Virginia is a stepping-stone to the governor's office: two recent GOP governors were previously Attorney General. In 2001, the GOP Attorney General Mark Earley lost to Governor Warner. This year, yet another Republican AG (Kilgore) is running for governor. Democrats must bring an end to Republican control of this strategic position in Virginia politics. CNM believes Creigh Deeds is the candidate to do this. Support Creigh Deeds for Attorney General CNM is proud to endorse Creigh Deeds for Attorney General of The Commonwealth of Virginia. We encourage you to give him your support.
